Wellington Regional Council, health officials and Upper Hutt City Council say an increase in algal growth has been detected in the river.

Although levels are low at present, they say mats of algae are starting to wash up onto the banks and people and dogs should avoid contact with them.

Toxic algae can kill dogs and make people sick.

People are advised to keep their dogs away. Photo: RNZ
