Next year's Pacific Islands Forum leaders' summit, to be hosted by the Cook Islands, is likely to revolve around an environmental theme.

The Cook Islands prime minister, Henry Puna, says he's already planning the event and it's likely the governments of China, Japan and Israel will showcase their countries' renewable energy technology at the forum.

Mr Puna, who holds the environment portfolio, has ambitious plans to make the Cook Islands completely reliant on renewable energy.

He says Israel and China produce the world's best solar panels and Japan has outstanding technology.

Mr Puna says Japan's government is excited about its invitation to showcase its clean, green vehicles and has been asked to consider providing all the VIP transport for the summit, utilising battery-powered cars.

Mr Puna says the government of Australia has offered just over 200 thousand US dollars in funding support, New Zealand is also expected to contribute, while China has promised whatever is required to host the event.
