A Pacific playwright has been selected to take up a top international arts residency in Germany next month.

Courtney Meredith, who is Samoan Irish, will perform at next month's International Literature Festival of Berlin before taking up the Bleibtreu artist-in-residence for six weeks.

The 25 year old's first play, Rushing Dolls, has already won several awards prior to even getting to the stage, including best female playwright and runner-up for best play in the Adam New Zealand Play Awards.

Courtney Meredith says she's excited at this opportunity for her artistic and personal development.

"I just want to be able to refine more work. I definitely want to put together a first draft for a first collection - it would be a top priority for me. I want to take in as much experience as I can, and be a good ambassador. I'm the first New Zealander to have this residency, and the youngest person, so I do feel a huge responsibility."
