Alcohol ban in Chch suburbs

19:42 pm on 28 April 2011

Christchurch City Council has approved a six-month liquor ban in Riccarton and Ilam to deal with an increase in drunken disorder in the suburbs.

The ban was requested by police because of an increase in violence since access was blocked to central city bars in the wake of the 22 February earthquake and Christchurch's nighlife moved to the suburbs.

The ban would make it an offence for people to drink in public places in the specified area.

The alcohol ban has the backing of a local community leader.

Riccarton Wigram Community Board chair Mike Mora says he has been inundated with calls from fed-up locals complaining about the mess, thefts and intimidation.

Council staff will also investigate introducing alcohol bans to other areas such as Merivale and Akaroa and extending the ban currently in place in Papanui.

The ban in Riccarton and Ilam will come into force on 19 May and will apply 24 hours a day.
