Communities around Wellington will be out celebrating Waitangi Day from this weekend.

Wellington City Council will be hosting a free event at Waitangi Park from midday on Tuesday with multi-cultural performances and kai, including a hāngi that will be fundraising for a local kura reo and marae.

The popular music festival Kotahi will be back at Kahurangi School for another year.

The gates will open at 1.45pm with a performance by the entire school kapa haka group, followed by Bret McKenzie, Mara TK, Sam Manzanza's Afro beat, the City of Wellington Pipe Band, and Wellington Batucada.

The Porirua City Council is partnering up with mana whenua Ngāti Toa once again for an event at Te Rauparaha Park featuring waka rides on the Te Awarua-o-Porirua Harbour.

Whakarongotai Marae on the Kāpiti Coast will be commemorating Te Tiriti o Waitangi early, with an event between 10am and 5pm on Saturday.

There will also be event at Ōrongomai Marae in Upper Hutt on Waitangi Day, opening with a pōwhiri at 9am and ending at 2pm with a karakia whakakapi.

And while there are no events in Lower Hutt this year, Te Rā o te Raukura, the Māori cultural festival was hosted at Te Whiti Park at the end of last month.
