It's Christmas time, so lots of people will be back in their childhood home, feasting, and resisting the urge to squabble with their siblings.
This week, The Wireless is taking a look at homes that aren't the three-bedroom paradise many New Zealanders live in – or aspire to.
This year’s census shows over a third of households do not own their home. That’s an increase from 33.1 per cent in 2006. The census showed that most households who did not own their home were renting.
We start the week with the Shit Show Chateau, and other colourfully-named student flats in Dunedin, where the art on the wall isn't exactly Colin McCahon. “We took one look at it, went ‘ugh!’ and called in the builders”, says Lindsey Horne, a tenant in Dunedin.
We'll look at people who live on remote farms, communes, boats, and one person who says her home is online, though her first experience of the internet was “underwhelming”.
Darren Inwood, who is currently living in a van tells us he has learned important lessons. “The main thing I didn’t know was that if you park by the ocean, your vehicle gets really rusty, really quickly.”
And with Christmas day looming, we’ll be at the airport, taking in the scenes as people arrive home for the holidays.
