Indonesia Transport ministry experts have arrived in West Papua province to investigate Tuesday's crash by a passenger jet.

The Merpati airline Boeing 737, which was carrying about 100 people, broke into pieces while attempting to land at Rendani domestic airport in Manokwari.

In heavy rain, the aircraft skidded off the tarmac, smashed through trees and plunged into a river.

At least 20 people were injured in the crash with some taken to hospital with shattered limbs and head injuries.
