Constitution Day holiday planned for Fiji

14:12 pm on 25 August 2015

A new public holiday celebrating the constitution has been proposed for Fiji.

The proposal for Constitution Day comes in the Empoloyment Relations Amendment Bill being debated in parliament today.

The Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said the September 7th holiday will allow people to get to know about the merits of the Constitution.

He said more awareness about the constitution is needed.

The holiday would start next year.

Fiji's fourth constitution was controversially promulgated in 2013 in the run-up to elections last year.
