The blockade of the airport of Wallis and Futuna has entered its second week, leaving hundreds of people stranded.

Aircalin, which provides air links to Fiji and New Caledonia, has cancelled its latest flight as disgruntled locals of Hihifo keep blocking the airport, insisting that the airport company hire two locals.

Last week, the chiefs said they wrote to the French overseas minister, George Pau-Langevin, asking her to send a mediator to settle the dispute.

But the prefect says the letter has not been received in Paris and therefore any mediation is not envisaged.

According to the public broadcaster, the minister's advisor says Ms Pau-Langevin is concerned about the impact of the blockade.
