Two dead in separate road crashes

Two people have died overnight in separate road crashes.

A moped rider died after crashing into a truck in Gisborne. The scooter collided with the rear of the parked truck on Anzac Street at 10.15pm last night.

The 34-year-old man was critically injured and taken to Gisborne Hospital but died a short time later.

Meanwhile, a person died in a single vehicle crash on in Canterbury.

The crash happened shortly before 9pm on Balcairn Amberley Road in Hurunui District.

The crash closed State Highway 72 between Leithfield Road, Stokes Road and Western Terrace Road.

Traffic was diverted down Cornwall Terrace.
