The Fiji opposition party, SODELPA, has petitioned the president, asking him to convene a special session of parliament so Australian prime minister Scott Morrison can address it.

The party said Mr Morrison's visit, which starts today, is an historic bilateral visit by an important development partner for Fiji.

In a statement SODELPA said it was important for the government to provide an update of Fiji-Australia bilateral relations.

It said there needed to be a bipartisan approach to the welcome, with the opposition parties given the opportunity to have bilateral discussions with Mr Morrison on matters of common interest.

It said the Australian leader should also be able to meet with groups such as the Fiji-Australia Business Council, trade unions, and other non-state actors and civil society groups.
