The leader of French Polynesia's pro-independence party is at risk of losing his assembly seat over irregularities in his campaign accounts.

A French national comission has referred Oscar Temaru to the top administrative court, after vetting his campaign contributions and expenses.

It has rejected his accounts submitted for May's territorial election after it deemed US$36,000 was not explained properly.

Mr Temaru's party says it's confident he will be cleared.
