Fiji Public Service Commission says ministry audits not to cull retirees

15:26 pm on 31 August 2009

The Fiji Public Service Commission says the aim of performance audits of all government ministries is not to shed retirees who have been re-employed.

The commission's permanent secretary, Parmesh Chand, says more than 2,200 people have left the public sector since the retirement age was lowered from 60 to 55 in April.

It's been reported that Mr Chand hopes the audits will reduce the 241 retirees who've been re-employed on a contractual basis in the past four months but he says that's not the case.

"These audits are the mechanism which allow us a better picture as to how each of the ministries, departments and agencies in the whole of civil service are functioning and meeting their targets. It's got nothing to do with the impact of retirees or retired civil servants."
