It's beginning to look like an all right Christmas.

While today's weather continues to be unsettled, MetService is predicting Christmas day to be mostly fine throughout the country, with a few scattered showers.

"Christmas Eve starts off well, with generally fine weather and only the odd shower," their forecasters wrote.

"Later in the day, most of the South Island will see scattered showers, as well as eastern and central parts of the North Island.

"Christmas Day itself looks even better, with most places expecting fine weather, although we expect some showers to bubble up about inland areas in the afternoon and evening, with the possibility of thunderstorms.

"So, if you're planning a Kiwi Christmas on the beach, pack sunscreen and a hat along with the pavlova."

NIWA meteorologist Seth Carrier also said that the period from Christmas Eve to Boxing Day will continue to feature the chance for scattered afternoon showers and even a few thunderstorms.

"While temperatures on Christmas Eve may be slightly cooler than average, by Boxing Day most areas of the country will be enjoying warm weather, but it won't be nearly as hot as the record or near-record temperatures last Christmas," he said.
