The first evaluation of New Zealand's 22 cycleways has given a glowing report of their success, showing most cyclists have enjoyed their trip, although just a quarter of businesses surveyed felt they have benefited.
The Government invested $50 million in the national cycleway and local communities spent $30 million.
The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment commissioned the report, which shows almost 98 percent of cyclists enjoyed their experience, and 97 percent would recommend the cycleway.
The report found a quarter of businesses surveyed believed the trails had been good for their business, and about half believed it would be in the future.
Visitors using the trails are staying up to three nights and each spend up to $176 a day.
Richard Leggat, chairperson of New Zealand Cycle Trail, Nga Haerenga, says he expects the next set of data should show more positive results from businesses following the busy summer period.
Mr Leggat says the survey was completed in mid-2013.
