Papua New Guinea's treasurer Sir Rabbie Namaliu says he wants to be Prime Minister again, and he is confident his party will do well at the polls next year to land him the top job.

The newspaper, The National, reports that Sir Rabbie, who served as Prime Minister from 1988 to 1992, as saying his Pangu Pati will work hard to secure the numbers to form government after the 2007 election.

The Kokopo MP is in his second stint as leader of PNG's oldest party which formed government in 1972, 1977, 1982 and 1988.

He says that even though the party went to sleep in the last ten years, it has the experience to form government again.

The party currently has six MPs in the 109-seat parliament, but it is rumoured that it will lose two MPs believed to be signing up with National Alliance.

However, the party is re-establishing branches in most other provinces except Central, Sandaun and Bougainville as it heads to its annual convention in Lae this weekend.
