The Herald Digipoll survey has Labour up 2.3 points on its previous poll, taken in April, to 31 percent support.

The survey was carried out in the third week of August, and has Labour's support well above its 2014 election result of 24 percent.

National has dropped slightly from 51 to 50.8 percent, and the Green Party is also down, by 1.6 points to 9.2 percent.

New Zealand First and the Maori Party have both risen slightly, to 6.9 and 1 percent respectively.

John Key remains the country's preferred prime minister with 63.7 percent support.

The poll surveyed 750 voters and has a margin of error of +/-3.6 percent.

But in the latest Roy Morgan poll, released last week, support for Labour actually fell from 32 percent to 27 percent.

The Green Party's support also dropped to 11 percent in that poll, giving the two parties combined support of 38 percent.

In contrast National's support rose to 50.5 percent while New Zealand First recorded 8 percent support.
