Sport: Puaikura already eying OFC Champions League debut

Puaikura football coach Matt Calcott says every match is vital for his side, three weeks out from the start of the OFC Champions League.

The Cook Islands title holders beat Tonga's Veitongo FC and Lupe Ole Soaga from Samoa at the Champions League qualifying event to reach the main draw for the first time.

Their final group match is against Utelei Youth from American Samoa tomorrow and Calcott says there's still plenty to play for.

"You have limited time together so another game under your belts is important and probably a little bit of improvement on that last half an hour against the Samoan side," he said.

"Every time you play together in a football team you can learn to control games better and that's something that we will look to do a bit better on Friday."

Matt Calcott coached Team Wellington to a runners-up finish in each of the past two OFC Champions League campaigns.

He said playing against the the best Oceania's top teams will be a big step up for Puaikura.

"The gap is pretty big but we will do whatever we can to minimise that gap and it's a new experience for them," he said.

"Ironically, if we were to win the [qualifier] group we will end up in Team Wellington's group so that will be a great fixture for us and those boys.

"It's just good for the nation and the club itself and again it's experience - are we going to really push on and win it?

"Highly unlikely but from our point of view it's another step up for them and those football experiences can only be invaluable when they take them back Rarotonga."
