Police are warning motorists to make sure their cars are roadworthy during the "chilly months" after a Christchurch woman was stopped for driving with ice blanketed across her windscreen.

An officer in Wigram found the woman's car swerving across the centre island, driving onto the wrong side of the road during a school dropoff on Wednesday morning.

She received an infringement notice and was fined $150.

Senior Sergeant Paul Robertson said it was important motorists ensured their cars were "safe, roadworthy, and well equipped" for winter driving.

This included having a safe spare tyre, lights, brakes and windscreen-wipers all working, and a clean windscreen inside and out.

"With winter officially setting in, this is a clear reminder for motorists to think about safe winter driving," Robertson said.

"If you are ever in this situation, there are ways to safely and quickly defrost your windscreen, and we urge drivers to do so before they head out."
