Builders expect savings from industry changes

Some builders say red tape will be greatly reduced by the Government's decision to license them to carry out or oversee work that affects a building's structure or weathertightness.

From March 2012, only licenced builders will be allowed to undertake restricted work, which they will be able to self-certify, with the aim of reducing council inspections.

Robert Van Driel from A Grade Building, based in Wellington, says that will see building projects completed quicker and at a lower cost.

He says currently there could be anything from three to five days waiting time to get a council building inspector on site.

Mr Van Driel also says consumer confidence in the industry will be restored by making builders accountable for their work.

Simon Barber of JD Barber Construction, also based in Wellington, says the policy will force cowboys out of the industry.
