Kaitaia could be waiting up to 16 days before getting any water from the Aupouri Aquifer.
The Northland town will shortly enter its fourth week of 'essential use only' water restrictions as a severe drought continues to slam the region.
Mayor John Carter said work had already started on a pipeline from the aquifer to the Kaitaia treatment plant.
He said the new supply was thanks to a collaborative effort between the council and local iwi Te Rarawa and Ngāi Takoto.
Carter said a council-owned bore was also set to start supplying bulk water carriers.
