Search teams continue to scour Porirua for a missing elderly man after the Westpac helicopter failed to locate him late last night.

Police said the helicopter was seen using thermal imaging equipment.

Four search teams including from Land Search and Rescue were out again on Tuesday.

Graham Russell Smith, 77, went missing while going for a walk at 6.30pm on Sunday on Doctor Track on the Colonial Knob walkway.

The police were following up a number of sightings from the popular walking and biking area.

Smith has been described as 165cm tall, of slight build and wearing a blue puffer jacket and brown corduroy pants.

He was potentially suffering from dementia and had difficulty hearing, a police spokesperson said.

Yesterday, workers in the industrial and commercial areas in southwest Porirua were asked to check their yards.

Residents in the areas of Elsdon, Kenepuru Landing, and the western hills of Tawa were also asked to check their yards if they back onto the scenic reserve.

Police ask anyone who may have seen or know the whereabouts of Smith to call 111 and reference the file number 241111/3559.
