A gas leak in Auckland's CBD has now been contained.

Emergency services were alerted to a gas leak at the intersection of Customs Street East and Gore Street in Auckland's city centre just before 5pm this afternoon.

The gas was leaking from a manhole.

Gas company Vector said the location of the leak meant it took longer than usual to isolate, but this evening they said they could confirm it was now contained.

Fire and Emergency said the road would remain closed while emergency services ensured the gas had dispersed.

Earlier in the day, people in the Auckland CBD were warned to close all doors and windows due to the leak.

Several people have told RNZ they have received an alert to their phones warning them about the leak.

It warned people in the area to close their doors and windows.

The emergency also affected commuters on Thursday afternoon.

CBD resident Tu Natanahira, who was in the area, said it was causing significant disruption to the traffic.

"There's about a dozen or so buses wrapped around Commerce St heading towards Gore St," he said.

Natanahira said "more and more cars starting to come home from work" were also adding to a traffic jam.
