NZ skeleton racer gears up for final heats

New Zealand female skeleton racer Toinette Stoddard is in 17th place after her first two runs at the Winter Olympics on Friday.

Stoddard is currently 3.8 seconds behind the fastest racer Amy Williams, of Britain, with a combined time of 1 minute 51.78 seconds.

She will race in the final two heats at the Whistler sliding centre on Saturday. The athlete with the lowest combined time over all four runs will win gold.

Meanwhile, New Zealand snowboarder Kendall Brown failed to qualify for the halfpipe final, finishing three places below the cutoff in ninth.

Torah Bright won the event and claimed Australia's first Olympic gold medal in Vancouver. Americans Hannah Teter and Kelly Clark took the silver and bronze, respectively.

New Zealand's Kendall Brown finished 15th overall in the event despite dislocating her shoulder just before the to the halfpipe semifinal.

Brown, 20, posted a score of 33.3 on her first run and 28.2 in her second, but needed at least 35.5 to make the top six and progress to the final on Friday.

Rebecca Sinclair and Juliane Bray failed to make it past the qualifying stage and finished 21st and 24th, respectively.

Earlier, biathlete Sarah Murphy finished 82nd in the 15km individual race.
