Seals- friend or foe?

21:06 pm on 2 January 2018

Science communication student Lana Young, from the University of Otago is interested in New Zealand fur seals and New Zealand sea lions, which were hunted to the brink of extinction in the early 1800s.

Their numbers have slowly started to recover, but not everyone is happy to see them back on mainland New Zealand. Tourists love them – fishers, not so much.

To find out more, Lana talks to keen fishers and boat skippers Bill Dickson and Evan Kenton, and to marine mammal expert Will Rayment from the University of Otago.
