The Football Ferns have lost their Group A match against the Philippines at Wellington Regional Stadium this evening.
They fell behind to a 23rd minute goal by Sarina Bolden and despite creating several chances the Ferns were never able to get on the scoreboard.
The Ferns had been looking to take a massive step towards the cup's knockout stage if they had won.
They said before the match they had refocused and were ready to build on what they achieved during their historic win over Norway in Auckland last Thursday. No senior NZ football team - men or women - has ever advanced to the knockout section of a World Cup.
New Zealand is ranked 20 places higher in the world than the Philippines, who lost 0-2 to Switzerland in their tournament opener.
The Football Ferns final group game is against Switzerland in Dunedin on Sunday.
