One person stabbed, police officer hit from behind at boy racer gathering

One person was stabbed and a police officer was struck in the head from behind at a boy racer gathering in Longburn near Palmerston North last night.

In a statement, police said they were called to a reports that someone had been struck by a vehicle at a large gathering of "anti-social road users" on Works Road at about 1am this morning.

Detective Sergeant David Wilson said officers had to deal with a "volatile situation".

"Upon arrival, while one of our staff was arresting a person for disorderly behaviour, he was struck on the head from behind and knocked to the ground."

The officer was taken to hospital and is being treated for concussion, but the person who assaulted him has not been identified

"We would like to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the incident," said Wilson.

A person was also stabbed at the gathering and is now in a serious condition in hospital.

A 19-year-old man was arrested at the scene and has been charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

He is due to appear in court on Monday.
