Final feed arrives at Napier from the south

The final shipment of feed from the South Island for drought-afflicted North Island farms arrives at the Port of Napier on Wednesday.

Hawke's Bay rural support trust co-ordinator Mike Barham says the 1200 bales of straw will be distributed on Wednesday to farmers who have ordered it.

He says everybody that ordered feed has got what they needed. However, the mild autumn has been a real "get out of jail card".

Mr Barham said that after months of summer drought, Hawke's Bay is experiencing a remarkable recovery.

"It's amazing how nature can look after you and, probably combined with that, Hawke's Bay has a huge ability to respond quickly when the moisture levels are right."

He says the land is now emerald green it is hard to believe Hawke's Bay had just been through one of the worst droughts in 70 years.

Mr Barham says Hawke's Bay escaped the severe winter storm that left much of the South Island under snow and battered the lower North island.
