A newly introduced system in Fiji aims to prevent the loss of life and property damage from intense flooding and natural disasters.
The Flash Flood Guiding System for Fiji is set to improve early warnings of flooding through better monitoring and hopes to help the Meteorological Service issue more timely forecasts.

In April this year seven people died within a week as a result of flash flooding.
Two children drowned, one man was swept away, and four people died trapped in a vehicle trying to cross a swollen river near Suva.
The World Meteorological Organization is providing technical help with the new system.
