Jimmy Anderson took three wickets as England's seamers steered their side to victory over South Africa by an innings and 85 runs just before the close of the third day of the second test at Old Trafford.

The tourists were bowled out for 179 in their second innings with Anderson taking 3-30 as he became the leading wicket-taker among pace bowlers across all formats by moving past Australian Glenn McGrath's total of 949 with his second scalp.

The tourists had resumed their second innings on 23 without loss after England's mammoth 415-9 on Friday, but Anderson and fellow seamer Ollie Robinson (4-43) were excellent with their line and length to level the three-match series at 1-1.

The third test will be at The Oval from Sept. 8. South Africa won the first match by an innings and 12 runs at Lord's.

"It's amazing to come back from last week's disappointment at Lord's to put in the performance we have done. It gives us a lot of confidence and sets up the series nicely," England captain Ben Stokes said at the post-match presentation.

"It was one of those wickets where you didn't think you could hit through the line (as a batsman), some balls bounced and others skidded through.

"The progression from us (as a team) has been if you have that clear mindset and the positivity to score, that makes things a lot easier."

The jubilant Queens defeated Northern Kāhu 71-62 at the Trafalgar Centre in Nelson

The Queens were powered by MVP performance from dynamic Argentinian point guard Florencia Chagas (22 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists) with other notable contributions from Jamie Nared (14 points) and captain Stella Beck (11 points, 7 points and 5 steals.

Her tussle with fellow Tall Fern Micaela Cocks (14 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists) was a major highlight of the final.

In addition to Cocks Northern Kāhu were well served by Tera Reed (9 points and 10 rebounds) while Marte Grays and Tahlia Tupaea scored a dozen points apiece.

The regular season champions suffered a significant setback in that period with influential point guard Krystal Leger-Walker picking up two fouls.

Pulse netballer Parris Mason scored a crucial late basket for the Queens, and later told reporters she wants to continue playing both codes for as long as she can.

Fellow netballer Aliyah Dunn did not see much action on the basketball court for the Queen's this season - she was used as a reserve player.

Pumas lead Rugby Championship standings ahead of Wallabies on points differential

Australia bounced back from a humiliating loss in their last outing to beat world champions South Africa 25-17 at the Adelaide Oval.

Flanker Fraser McReight scored two tries and man of the match Marika Koroibete also crossed in the Rugby Championship fixture, with Noah Lolesio adding 10 points from the kicking tee in an assured performance at flyhalf.

The Springboks, looking for a first win over the Wallabies in Australia since 2013, had only a single Handre Pollard penalty on the board until Kwagga Smith scored two tries in the last five minutes.

"It was a tough tour of Argentina and I'm very proud of the effort we put in," said Australia captain James Slipper.

"There were parts of that game where we had to show a lot of character, and we scored when we had our chances."

Desperate to redeem themselves after the 48-17 loss to Argentina in their last outing, the Wallabies made their first decent start of the season.

Argentina's win sees them sit at the top of the Rugby Championship standings on points differential from the Wallabies who stunned the Springboks yesterday.

New Zealand are third ahead of South Africa in fourth - in a changing of the guard which sees the World Champion Springboks sitting last and Argentina at the top.
