HIV-positive man charged over unprotected sex

A Christchurch man has been charged after accusations he had unprotected sex with several men without telling them he is HIV-positive.

Johnny Lumsden, 26, was arrested earlier this month and has been charged with criminal nuisance.

Detective Senior Sergeant Scott Anderson said two people have alleged they had unprotected sexual encounters with Mr Lumsden and he did not tell them he was HIV-positive.

Anyone who has had a sexual encounter with Mr Lumsden should contact the police and health services, he said.

While Mr Lumsden has been charged with criminal nuisance, Mr Anderson said if a person became infected with HIV through unprotected undisclosed sexual contact then the offence would became wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
