The mother of a fallen soldier in Iraq is grateful a memorial service is being held in Hawaii to remember Samoans who have died in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars .

Mele Time says she's happy that Hawaii has got its act together, as American Samoa is still trying to source funding to hold its own memorial service to honour fallen American Samoans serving with the U.S. military.

Her daughter, Sergeant Tina Time, was the first American Samoan woman soldier to die in the Iraq war when she was killed in a vehicle accident in 2004.

She says people mustn't forget the sacrifices these officers have made for their country.

"Im glad this is something that's been put together. It brings back memories of my daughter and all those who have passed."

Mele Time says one of her four other children in the military service will represent the family at the service.
