Fewer road works signs in Christchurch now

08:37 am on 7 August 2013

Christchurch City Council is reducing the number of signs at the many road works in the city to stay on side with motorists.

Roads are being dug up in 130 locations at any one time. That number is set to increase as repairs to damaged sewer and water pipes intensify.

Road works manager John Mackie said motorists were becoming complacent about signs because of the sheer number of them.

So the council is doing away with orange man-with-the-shovel and 'works end' signs. Where possible, Mr Mackie said there will be no speed restrictions.
