Govt urged to go further with jury duty changes

Business New Zealand says the Government could do more to improve the jury duty system.

Under new rules, people can now apply to defer their jury service to a more convenient time within 12 months of the original summons date.

The Government says making the system more flexible is expected to improve overall juror attendance, and reduce the number of occasions people are excused from service.

Last year, more than 60% of people summoned were excused.

Business New Zealand chief executive Phil O'Reilly says while business welcomes the change, there's scope to go further.

In particular, he says, the Government should look at payments for jurors which he describes as too low.
