Cyclists in Christchurch will have a network of 13 mayor cycleway routes built in the city within five years.
Christchurch City councillors voted on the plan on Wednesday during deliberations of the city's Annual Plan.
The Major Cycleways is a network of 13 connected routes, linking suburbs, education facilities, business and shopping areas as well as popular recreational destinations.
Councillor Phil Clearwater said the cycleways will set a new standard for Christchurch. They will allow younger and less confident riders to feel safe and increase their cycle use.
The network is due to be completed by 2018.
