Marshalls brace for king tide

15:13 pm on 9 March 2016

People in the Marshall Islands are preparing for what's anticipated to be the highest tide of the year this afternoon, with warnings of flooding due to a combined storm brewing.

The National Weather Service on Guam has issued a warning of possible inundation until Friday, with high tide expected at 4:39 this afternoon local time.

Our correspondent, Giff Johnson, said the important thing is that people are aware of the flooding risk.

"That allows people at least to prepare, particularly for people who live in zones that have flooded in the past, they kind of know the drill. You get things out of the way, you move things, you don't leave your vehicle in a particular location, things like that. You just try to do your best to mitigate it."

Giff Johnson said there's not much more people can do, as there hasn't been much done in the way of mitigation projects to improve shoreline protection.
