American Samoa Governor eyes a fish sausage maker to replace cannery

14:52 pm on 5 February 2010

The American Samoa Governor, Togiola Tulafono, says he has a Thai firm interested in setting up in the territory.

Since the closure of the Samoa Packing cannery in September, Togiola has been seeking new industry to fill the void.

Togiola says during a recent trip to Thailand he met with officials of an Asian food processor, which enquired about a number of issues such as infrastructure, utility costs and local law and other information pertaining to operating in Pago Pago.

He says this company, which will be sending a proposal soon for a fish processing business, manufactures fish sausages and exports in the international community.

The Governor would not identify the company but he says his administration's goal is to provide jobs and hopefully increase economic development.
