Supermarkets feel the banana pinch

Bananas are still being rationed in supermarkets after a cargo boat bringing the fruit from Ecuador broke down a couple of weeks ago.

Allgood Organics said a ship carrying their bananas arrived on Saturday, but it would take a week of ripening before the fruit hit the shelves.

Progressive Enterprises, which represents several large supermarkets, said it was expecting a boat carrying bananas to arrive within the next day.

It said supermarkets had had slightly fewer bananas than usual, but the volume sold last week in Countdown was down by less than 20 percent on the same week last year.
