A Te Puke High School teacher who was stabbed in the shoulder and neck by a student, hopes new guidelines on searching students will prevent others being harmed.
The Government guidelines detail what schools should do when searching for drugs, weapons or pornography.
The teenager who stabbed teacher Steve Hose with a kitchen knife was referred to Police Youth Aid and expelled from school for the attack in May last year.
He says he never suspected his attacker had a weapon.
Mr Hose says it is hard to tell whether the guidelines will be useful, but it is difficult to suspect a student of wrongdoing unless it is brought to a teacher's attention by other students.
He says he is more aware of his surroundings in the classroom since the attack.
