Police are investigating a fire, now deemed to be suspicious, at a historic Auckland church.
The fire broke out at the 141-year-old St Stephen's Presbyterian Church on Jervois Road, Ponsonby on Saturday.
Eighteen trucks were at the scene and smoke could be seen across the city.
Police said they have been working closely with Fire and Emergency investigators.
Reverend Grant Ridout said the church was working with engineers and safety specialists to put in the necessary safety precautions as well as remove any residual debris.
The site is closed but he said it would be restored.
According to the Heritage NZ website, the church is a Category 2 building and is made of kauri.
