Fiji's NGO Coalition for Human Rights has called for an independent investigation into last month's death of a man allegedly beaten by police.

Last week, the police commander Brigadier General Sitiveni Qiliho ordered a criminal investigation into the death of 26-year-old Josua Lalauvaki.

The Coalition says it hopes the probe will be independent so as not to give impunity to those responsible for his death.

It says the results should be made public amid a continued effort at eliminating torture and police brutality in Fiji which it says has been a persistent issue in the country.

It says it released similar comments last year after the death of Vikarant Nand who died in police custody.
