Pigeon cull measures announced for capital

13:05 pm on 15 October 2008

Wellington City Council has announced a number of measures to try to reduce the number of pigeons in the capital.

Complaints have been reported from cafe owner and public about an increase of pigeons and their resulting "nuisance" behaviour in Midland Park and Civic Square.

The council has selected a contractor to shoot the pigeons with an air rifle at night.

It also plans to limit bird numbers by employing a contractor to collect their eggs from nests.

The council is also looking at the possibility of introducing contraception pellets to cut bird numbers.
