Smoke expected on Rangitoto Island

10:04 am on 14 May 2009

The Department of Conservation says people in Auckland should not be alarmed if Rangitoto Island looks like it is erupting on Thursday.

If the weather is good enough, DoC plans to burn several large wood piles on Motutapu Island, which will make it appear as though smoke is coming from Rangitoto.

Motutapu Island is behind Rangitoto when viewed from Auckland.

The wood piles will contain wood from non-native trees that were threatening to fall.

The agency will spend two weeks burning them as a part of a two year operation to make Motutapu Island pest-free.
