Siopili Perez, who is the faipule, or chief, on Nukunonu - one of the three atolls making up Tokelau - will hold the post for a year.

It is his second time in the post after being Ulu in 2015.

The inauguration of the 25th Ulu o Tokelau, Aliki Faipule Siopili Perez, comes as the Tokelau General Fono, or parliament, meets on Nukunonu.

One item up for discussion is the territory's multi million dollar purchase of two helicopters, a move that has angered the New Zealand Government, which sent its administrator,

David Nicholson, to the islands last month seeking an explanation.
