Former Asian Football Confederation president Mohammed Bin Hammam has been banned from the sport for life by FIFA, after being found guilty of bribery.

FIFA's ethics committee made the decision on Saturday after a two-day hearing.

The BBC reports Mr Bin Hammam, 62, was accused of trying to buy votes in a FIFA presidential election where he was challenging incumbent Sepp Blatter.

It was claimed that envelopes containing up to $US40,000 in cash were given to delegates during a meeting of the Caribbean Football Union in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago in May.

A report by the ethics committee said there was ''comprehensive, convincing and overwhelming'' proof that bribes had been paid to officials to support Mr Bin Hammam's campaign for the FIFA presidency.

In a statement, Mr Bin Hammam's legal council said he will continue to fight the case through every legal route available to him.
