17:28 pm on 27 October 2013

Searchers looking for a man missing for six days on the West Coast are focusing their efforts in a remote area used by fishermen and hunters.

Yohan Simon, 32, was due out of the bush near Karamea on the West Coast on 21 October. He had been dropped off by a friend the previous Friday to spend time gold-panning and abseiling.

Police now have information about the likely area he is in from someone who picked him up on the Karamea highway on the morning of 21 October.

The driver dropped Mr Simon close to the settlement of Little Wanganui where he said he was going to go fishing.

The leader of the search team, Senior Constable Mike Voice, says there are plenty of places for Mr Simon to find shelter in the area.

Mr Voice says field teams are focusing on that area as there are a lot of empty baches which are usually stocked with wood and provisions for trampers.

Mr Voice says the searchers are being hampered by swollen rivers.
