The 74 year old woman was on the bus in Silverdale, Auckland on Friday morning when she noticed a wallet had been left behind by a passenger, police said.

She went downstairs to give it to the driver when she fell, police said.

She was taken to Auckland hospital but died later that day.

The death has been referred to the Coroner, and WorkSafe are making inquiries, while bus company Ritchies Coachlines is undertaking its own full investigation.

Auckland Transport said its deepest condolences went out to family and friends affected by the tragedy.
