Emergency services were called to Pukepine Sawmills on Jellicoe Street in Te Puke around 3pm yesterday.

A man in his 40s was taken to Tauranga Hospital in a critical condition but later died of his injuries.

In a statement, Pukepine general manager Jeff Tanner said the company would remain closed until Tuesday.

"It is with enormous sadness that on Thursday 28th of March we lost a husband, father, friend, and valued employee during a workplace accident at Pukepine Sawmills.

"Our thoughts are right now first and foremost with the family and words cannot express our deepest sympathy for their loss."

He said the worksite would be blessed on Monday and the company was supporting the man's family and its staff.

WorkSafe has been notified.
