Workshop on promoting revenue transparency underway in PNG

04:17 am on 23 April 2013

A workshop gets underway in Alotau in Papua New Guinea today to publicise a mechanism promoting revenue transparency in resource rich countries.

The Papua New Guinea Government has indicated it wants to sign up to the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative - a global scheme to bring greater transparency to way the mining and oil sectors interact with governments.

Transparency International in PNG is co-ordinating the workshop to make more people aware of the Initiative.

Spokesperson, Jerry Bagita, says the data will give the public more clarity on how revenues from the extractive industries are received, allocated and spent.

"The companies have already indicated they are prepared to take this to the next level. It just depends how well the state is going to respond to complement the efforts of the industry to match that - information for information. If the industry says this is how much we paid to Government then how is it going to be matched in the books of the state."
