20:38 pm on 25 June 2013

The Fiji prime minister, Commodore Frank Bainimarama, has called on the people of his country to pray for the peacekeeping efforts and safe return of Fijian soldiers departing for the Golan Heights.

They are to serve as UN peacekeepers in the Israeli-occupied area along the border with Syria.

Fiji Village reports that in a national address on Tuesday evening, Commodore Bainimarama said the 182 soldiers had received a fitting farewell earlier in the day when thousands gathered at Albert Park in Suva.

He says the soldiers are prepared for the mission and they are well aware of the volatile situation in the Golan Heights.

The prime minister says his government has offered the UN 540 soldiers for the mission and is willing to consider sending more.

The troops will leave on a UN charter flight from Nadi on wednesday.
